Progress for Pasadena Immigrants!

Together with NDLON (National Day Laborers Organizing Network) and CLUE-Pasadena (Clergy and Laity United for Economic justice), POP! had its first major victory with Lizbeth Mateo as Lead Organizer on March 27, 2017.

Dozens of Pasadena residents and clergy gave public comment urging the Pasadena City Council to strengthen their current/proposed immigration policy regarding collusion with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). ICE has been a force of terror in immigrant communities across the country, forcing many into hiding, unable to report crimes, including domestic abuse and rape.

POP’s organizing efforts recruited many of the people who gave comment as well as expert legal services in crafting the proposed language of the improved policy that the council unanimously voted yes to strengthen – even beyond the lengths that some municipalities that call themselves “Sanctuary Cities” have gone.

But as of this writing, the fight is not completely over. Securing our language in the final policy remains to be done, and has just been proposed in a letter emailed to all Pasadena City Council members on April 3. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR COUNCIL MEMBER AND URGE HIM OR HER TO SUPPORT OUR PROPOSED LANGUAGE for the new immigration policy our city leaders agreed to strengthen.

With this achievement, Pasadena goes a long way toward setting the moral and just standard for the USA when it comes to protecting law-abiding immigrants from deportation.

Sheriff McDonnell: Don’t Side with Trump Against California!

[Español más abajo]

Join us to protest LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell for going against the CA Values Act!

(Please share this event with all of your networks)

SB54 – known as the VALUES ACT – is simple. It’s a California state bill that separates the criminal justice system and the immigration system. Think of it like a big, beautiful wall between local police and Trump’s deportation machine.

But at this critical time, LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell has chosen to stand with Trump, and is actively instigating CA Sheriffs and Senators to oppose the bill. We need to make sure there is a strong response denouncing his about-face, and sending a clear message that Trump’s politics won’t be tolerated in California.

If we work together, we can pass SB54 in California and create a model for the rest of the nation, saying loud and clear “Our local police should protect ALL members of our communities, and not help enforce Trump’s agenda of hate”.

Please, join us to tell Sheriff McDonnell to stand up for SB54, the VALUES act, and stand with immigrant families!

Learn How to Stop Deportations

Deportations are happening. Here you can see the heartbreaking video that a daughter took from the car while her father was being detained. The man was driving his daughters to school and has lived in the country 20 years.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti spoke out and said, “We want more answers. And we need to make sure that this is not the beginning of a dangerous and dark time here, where people are afraid to go to school, people are afraid to drop their kids off, people afraid to go to work. That would be troubling for our economy and the safety of our streets.”

There were raids in Pasadena over the past few weeks. What can be done to stop this cruel and self-defeating policy?

Come to POP!’s Popular Assembly on March 18 to learn what can be done. Volunteer for the rapid response team when ICE threatens a Pasadena neighbor. Learn how to host an event for your religious, political, or social group joined by a representative from the immigrant community. Connect and see where your specific talents and professional skills can work to stop the deportation crisis.

Deportations are happening and it’s not enough for the mayor to speak out, though POP! would like to see 100 mayors from across the country band together to make a national difference quickly. This means putting pressure on OUR mayor and on City Council. Come learn how. We’ll see you March 18, 3 – 5 PM at the Pasadena Community Jobs Center at 500 N. Lake Ave. 91101.
